30th December

Dear Members

You may already be aware of the recent sad death of Michael Oliver MBE, founder of the Great Dorset Steam Fair, who passed away peacefully at The Dorset County Hospital on Sunday November 29th. I shall, on behalf of our club, be sending a letter of condolence to his family, as I am sure you will all agree with me that, as the prime force in setting up and running what has become the world’s largest steam festival, he has done a great deal to raise the profile of the steam and historic vehicle preservation movement. In doing so he has created a great social event enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages and walks of life.

Many other events have sought to emulate his achievements, albeit in a smaller way, and we, as a steam enthusiast’s club, have benefited greatly from his personal efforts to show the movement as a force for the preservation of our industrial history, and also providing a means of bringing together enthusiasts and like-minded people for what has become one of the highlights of our rally calendar.

I know that you will all join me in sending condolences to his family at this sad time.

I am sure the event will carry on the great tradition started by Martin’s father who will however be sadly missed.

David Vaughan (Honorary Secretary SSEC)
